Monster Hunter Wilds Lost Over 90% Of Its Player Base on Steam

After Monster World’s phenomenon, one could easily think that its sequel, Monster Hunter Wilds, would also be a hit for Capcom. However, it seems that the game is experiencing a rough start among players. As per a new report via GameRant, Capcom’s Action-RPG has lost over 98% of its user base on Steam. Some players are expected to return with the game’s next major update, but still, this is a significant loss and shows that the interest in this game is fading slowly. It’s a concerning trend, in particular, after the game was hit by review-bombing on Valve’s store.

A Record-Breaking Launch That Didn’t Last

Monster Hunter Wilds peaked over 1.38 million simultaneous players following its February 28 debut. It quickly became the biggest PC launch in the history of Capcom’s action RPG franchise. As we’ve said at the beginning of this article, everything seemed to be going well, and the RPG appeared to be on track to become a major success, following in the footsteps of its predecessor. However, the game quickly experienced criticism from PC players due to performance issues. The issues screamed over the game’s qualities, and its early success started to shrink.

The download trend reached a new low as of late June. Monster Hunter Wild’s daily concurrent player peaks on Valve’s platform consistently dropped below 20,000 during the busy Weekend days. According to SteamDB data, the action RPG peaked at 18,468 users over the 24 hours ending June 21. Compared to its late February 2025 peak, the game saw a huge decline of 98.67%.

Review-Bombing and Technical Woes

The decline in player numbers coincides with a major review-bombing campaign that saw Monster Hunter Wilds fall to “Overwhelmingly Negative” recent reviews on Steam. The fan backlash stems from multiple issues in the game. However, the biggest consensus goes for the game’s technical state. Many players complain about the poor performance across a wide range of hardware configurations. The issues involve players with Capcom’s recommended system requirements. As per the reviews, while some games’ performance tends to improve after the release, Capcom’s title is worsening with every update. At the same time, the reviews complain about the delay in these updates and the limited flow of new content.

Hope for PC Players Rest in Title Update 2, While Consoles’ Performance Remains Stable

Monster Hunter Wilds Title Update 2 is expected to come on June 30. The update is likely to address some of the biggest issues in the game. Many players are waiting to see if this update will finally resolve the problems with PC performance. In light of the update, we may see some players returning to test the game again. For comparison, the Title Update 1 doubled the concurrent Steam player peak following its early April launch. However, the increase was short-lived.

It is worth noting that while the performance on PC is underwhelming, the game has solid numbers on consoles. The Xbox Series X/S version currently holds a 4.3-star score based on 2,200 players impressions. On PlayStation Store, more than 60,000 players gave it an average rating of 4.49 stars. The console scores have been stable since the game’s launch in February. Time will tell if the PC version will reach this favorable score.
