Leaked PS6 Specs Suggest Sony Is Chasing Power — Without the Price Tag

If a new specs leak is to be believed, Sony’s next-gen PS6 console — reportedly codenamed Orion — is aiming to be both powerful and surprisingly affordable. The leak comes via Moore’s Law Is Dead, a leaker with a mixed track record but notable past accuracy — especially when it came to the PS5 Pro. This time, he claims to have viewed a confidential AMD roadmap from 2023, outlining early technical targets for both the PlayStation 6 and a companion handheld device, codenamed Canis.

To be clear: these specs were current as of 2023. They may have shifted since, but according to the leaker, Sony tends to stick fairly close to its original hardware trajectory.

Sony Aiming for a Mass Market Win, Not a $1,000 Power Box

Perhaps the most surprising takeaway? Sony reportedly doesn’t want to repeat the PS5 Pro pricing mistake. The PS6 is targeting a much lower entry price — possibly below the $700 mark that left some fans cold last time around. Of course, global economics could still throw a wrench in that plan. But from the outset, it looks like Sony wants the PS6 to be something most players can afford, not just hardcore enthusiasts.

PS6 Could Enter Production by Mid-2027

While official timelines remain under wraps, the leak suggests that manufacturing could begin in mid-2027, which aligns with a late 2027 or early 2028 launch window. That would give the PS5 nearly eight years on the market — a typical life cycle for Sony hardware.

A New Handheld, Too — And It Might Launch Alongside the Console

One of the more interesting developments is the next-gen PlayStation handheld, codenamed Canis. The device is reportedly being built alongside the PS6, and could even launch simultaneously.

Specs suggest it’s less powerful than the PS6 — as expected — but no slouch either. If real, it’s aiming to comfortably outperform Nintendo’s upcoming Switch 2, while maintaining backwards compatibility with PS4 and PS5 games.

Here’s What the Leak Says About the Specs

PS6 “Orion” Target Specs (as of 2023):

  • 8x Zen 6 (or later) CPU cores
  • 40–48+ RDNA 5 Compute Units @ 3GHz+
  • 160W total board power (TBP)
  • 160-bit or 192-bit GDDR7 memory bus, 32GT/s+
  • 3x rasterization performance vs PS5
  • Improved ray tracing performance
  • Chiplet-based design
  • Full backwards compatibility with PS5 and PS4

PlayStation Handheld “Canis” Target Specs:

  • 4x Zen 6c CPU cores
  • 12–20 RDNA 5 Compute Units @ 1.6–2GHz
  • 15W TBP
  • 128-bit LPDDR5X-7500+ memory bus
  • 0.5x rasterization vs PS5, better ray tracing
  • Backwards compatibility with PS5/PS4
  • microSD + M.2 SSD slots
  • Touchscreen, haptics, dual mics, USB-C video out

These are aggressive numbers, especially for a handheld. But they paint a picture of a system designed for low power draw, cooler operation, and a strong balance of performance and cost. Sony may not be chasing raw teraflops — it’s aiming for efficiency and accessibility.

Cross-Gen Is the Future — And Sony Knows It

Don’t expect a sharp generational break. If anything, the PS6 and PS5 will likely coexist for a while, with a shared game library and unified backend. That might make the leap to next-gen feel softer than in past cycles, but it also gives Sony more room to grow its install base.

It also gives the handheld a key role — acting as a companion device that inherits your library, supports cross-save, and gives you a way to keep playing without being tethered to a TV.

PS6 specs leak: Is This the Real Deal?

While it’s always smart to treat early leaks with skepticism, this one does line up with Sony’s long-term habits — iterative improvements, cross-gen continuity, and a keen focus on price and power efficiency. If anything, the most exciting takeaway is that Sony might finally be back in the handheld game — and this time, they’re building it to live alongside the PS6, not underneath it.
