HMD Global Pulls Back in the US Due to Tough Conditions

HMD Global, the company behind Nokia-branded phones, has decided to reduce its presence in the United States. The company says this move is due to growing challenges in the country’s business environment.

In a statement shared with Wired editor Julian Chokkattu, HMD explained that the U.S. market has become more difficult because of economic and political issues. While the company didn’t go into full detail, one likely reason is the ongoing problem with tariffs, which make it more expensive for companies to sell goods in the U.S.

HMD is not the only global brand dealing with these issues, but the company says it had to make this tough call after thinking things through carefully.

Support for Customers & Employees Will Continue

Although HMD is reducing its U.S. operations, it is not leaving customers behind. The company has promised to continue supporting users in the U.S. This includes honouring all warranties and offering customer service through its global support team.

This means that people who already own HMD or Nokia phones in the U.S. can still get help if something goes wrong with their devices.

The company also mentioned that some U.S.-based staff will be affected by this decision. HMD says it values their work and is doing what it can to support them during this time of change.

It’s unclear how many workers are impacted, but HMD appears to be handling the transition with care and responsibility.

Looking Ahead

Even with this cutback in the U.S., HMD says it’s not slowing down globally. The company is focusing on other key areas like its “Family,” “Secure,” and “Microfinancing” product lines. These are parts of its business where it’s seeing strong growth.

At the moment, things are not going so well for HMD in the U.S. Nevertheless, it still has big plans elsewhere and want to keep growing in the long run. While this is ongoing, the company has assured that it will continue to support its customers in America and its staff who may have been affected, in one way or another, by this change.
