Microsoft has officially confirmed that the next major update to Windows 11 will be version 25H2, set to launch later in 2025. The first preview build for version 25H2 is already available for Windows Insiders. This release will follow version 24H2 and, importantly, will share the same platform release and servicing stack.

What does this mean for users? Simply put, upgrading from version 24H2 to 25H2 will be much faster and smoother. It will feel like installing a regular monthly update. There’s no need to reinstall system files, and the update will only take a few minutes followed by a short restart.
This is different from the transition between version 23H2 and 24H2. That upgrade required what Microsoft calls an “OS swap” — a process that replaces most system files. These kinds of upgrades usually take longer and are more disruptive than cumulative updates.
Because both versions 24H2 and 25H2 share the same foundation, Microsoft can deliver updates and security patches to both versions at once. While some new features will be exclusive to version 25H2, many updates may appear in both, just with certain features disabled in 24H2.
According to Microsoft, features for 25H2 are already being developed within the 24H2 framework. These are delivered through monthly updates but remain inactive until version 25H2 goes live.

This strategy isn’t new. Microsoft used a similar approach with Windows 11 versions 22H2 and 23H2, and previously with Windows 10. In fact, Windows 10 version 22H2 shares its base with version 2004, which first launched in 2020.
When Windows 11 version 25H2 becomes available, it will reset the support timeline. Enterprise users will get 36 months of support, while Home and Pro users will get 24 months. This makes upgrading a smart move if you want the longest possible support for your device.
So far, there are no new features exclusive to 25H2 in the current Insider builds. The changelog mirrors that of version 24H2. New features are expected to roll out gradually over the next few weeks. Sources suggest that 25H2 will be released to the public in September or October 2025.
With Windows 10 nearing its end-of-life, Microsoft is being cautious. The goal is stability. Using the same platform release helps avoid major issues and ensures a smooth experience.
