Google Pixel phones are well-liked because of their distinctive software. Artificial intelligence-driven tools simplify mundane tasks like calls and picture taking. Pixel phones, however, do not have some obvious features that users of other brands would want. One such feature that Pixel phones do not have is a double tap-to-sleep feature.

A majority of Android smartphones from Samsung, Xiaomi, and OnePlus let you turn off the screen by double-tapping the lock screen. In Pixel phones, though, double-tapping the lock screen won’t turn off the screen. Ironically, you can double-tap to turn on the screen.

Now, as reported by AndroidAuthority, it appears that Google is finally adding this feature. The latest Android 16 beta reveals that the double-tap-to-turn-off-screen gesture is coming to Pixel phones. The gesture isn’t activated in Android 16 Beta 4, but there’s proof that it’s functional. Double-tap a blank area on the lock screen of your Pixel, and its screen turns off. This action functions as intended, but there is currently no option for users to activate it.

We are surprised that Google didn’t already have this simple feature previously, considering how useful and common it is on other devices. Either way, it’s great that Pixel users will finally get to experience it. Sadly, we don’t know when the feature is coming officially.

Since it is not in the test version that we have now, it probably won’t be in the final release of Android 16. It may come in one of the first updates to Android 16, but we will just have to wait and find out. If you cannot wait for the final release, you can enable this feature right now. A third-party application known as Pixel Toolbox can enable the gesture ahead of its official release. If you’ve made the switch from another phone to a Pixel, do you miss double-tap to turn off the screen? Tell us in the comments!
