During the MagicBook Pro 16 “HUNTER Edition” launch in China, Honor hinted at two new smartwatches. The company also released a dark teaser image showing the silhouettes of two different smartwatch models. Both models are anticipated to launch as part of “two brand new series,” in addition to the powerful laptop. The teaser suggests a design-forward strategy that might complement the high-end appearance of the Watch 5 Ultra.

Honor Smartwatches: Design hints suggest bold form factors

With a prominent crown and a physical button on the right side beneath it, the first smartwatch seen in the teaser has a geometric case that is probably octagonal. The sportier aesthetic suggested by the rugged exterior and bold lines may appeal to active users or those who like more durable wearables.

The Watch 5 Ultra, which Honor showcased at MWC 2025 in March, is strikingly similar to this model, according to observers. This suggests that Honor may be getting ready to release the Watch 5 Ultra or a design variant with a comparable profile.

A second watch with a more traditional, round design sits next to the sporty model. Although the teaser only provides a partial view, this device seems to have a unique lug shape and a minimal-bezel display. It implies a more sophisticated and perhaps fashion-forward substitute for the original model. The visual contrast between the two suggests that Honor will target distinct user segments with this upcoming pair. However, there are no technical specs for these devices at the moment.

Watch 5 Ultra: nearing release or reused design?

The Watch5 Ultra, which boasts a grade 5 titanium case and long battery life, is still the subject of speculation. It first debuted at MWC 2025 and demonstrated Honor’s emphasis on high-end materials and user experience. There is a close similarity between the Watch 5 Ultra and the teased octagonal model. This is fueling the idea that Honor might be preparing to release the Watch 5 Ultra, or at least use it as inspiration.

Though it only provides design clues, the teaser image confirms the existence of two new smartwatch series. But now that Honor’s marketing cycle is underway, more information and formal declarations are probably on the horizon. Honor is getting ready to grow its line of smart wearables. The new devices may not add new features or improve upon those that are already there, such as the Watch 5 Ultra.

We have been testing the Tecno Camon 40 Premier 5G and wanted to share our battery life findings.

Tecno switched to Si/C tech for the Camon 40 Premier battery, but that netted a minimal 100mAh increase over the Camon 30 Premier battery capacity – from 5,000mAh to 5,100mAh.

The new model also has an upgraded chipset, a Dimensity 8350 on a more advanced N4P node from TSMC. The 2024 Premier had a Dimensity 8200 Ultimate fabbed on an N4 node and with older CPU cores (A78/A55 vs. A715/A510 on the new model).

Other relevant changes include a slightly smaller display, 6.67” vs. 6.77”, at just about the same pixel density as the resolutions are quite close.

Battery life test

On paper, all of the hardware changes promise better battery life for the Tecno Camon 40 Premier, but its predecessor has it beat. And not by a small margin either, the 2024 Premier has an Active use rating that is 2 hours higher and has higher scores in each individual test. The video playback test isn’t even close as the older phone with a larger screen lasted 4 and a half hours more. Gaming is a surprise too, the Mali G615-MC6 provides a lot of extra oomph in the graphics department over the G610-MC6 (we will look at performance in more detail in the review). Yet the older phone lasted nearly 2 hours more.

The Infinix Note 50 Pro+ has very similar hardware to the Camon 40 Premier – Dimensity 8350 and slightly larger 5,200mAh battery and a larger 6.78” display. Both displays run at 144Hz, but the Tecno has an LTPO panel. The scores are nearly identical, both the Active use rating and the individual tests. The smaller LTPO display didn’t make much of a difference.

Then there is the Oppo Reno13 Pro, another Dimensity 8350 based phone. This one has the advantage of a larger 5,800mAh battery and even though it has to feed a larger 6.83” display (120Hz non-LTPO OLED), the Oppo showed an impressive endurance with great scores across the board.

Charging speed test

The Tecno Camon 40 Premier ships with a 70W fast charger in the box, which is rare to see these days and a perk for anyone who hasn’t bought a fast PD charger yet. However, the Premier doesn’t always charge at 70W – to get that, you have to select the Hyper option from the lock screen after plugging in the phone. Otherwise, it defaults to Smart and you can alternatively pick a Low-Temp mode as well.

While Tecno hasn’t shared an official charge rating for the default Smart mode, the phone matched the Galaxy A56 (5,000mAh), which tops out at 45W, but was behind the Camon 40 Pro (5,200mAh), which also does 45W. This is at the 15 minute mark, anyway.

By 30 minutes, the Premier has pulled ahead of the Galaxy and is well ahead of its Pro sibling. That said, it trails the older Camon 30 Premier, which also came with a 70W charger (yes, its battery is 100mAh smaller, but that’s only a 2% difference in capacity).

Interestingly, the Infinix Note 50 Pro+ (5,200mAh) and Poco X7 Pro (with a large 6,000mAh battery) blazed ahead with their higher-rated chargers, 100W and 90W respectively. The Infinix had its battery nearly full after 30 minutes.

However, the Poco X7 Pro hit a speed bump after reaching 83% in 30 minutes, it needed another 14 minutes to get to 100%. This allowed the Camon 40 Premier to catch up and a full charge was only 3 minutes slower – yes, the battery on the Tecno is 900mAh smaller, but keep in mind that we’re looking at the results in Smart mode, not Hyper mode.

Switching over to Hyper mode, we don’t see a huge difference to start with, but the mode’s extra speed is most noticeable at the 30 minute mark when it’s 75% for Hyper Mode vs. 70% for the default Smart mode. This isn’t enough to catch up to the old Premier or phones with higher charge rates, though. If you plan to charge the battery to full, you may as well not bother with Hyper mode – it only cuts 2 minutes of the total time. This is more suitable for those times when Camon 40 Premier’s battery is dead and you only have 20-30 minutes to charge.

Verdict

The Tecno Camon 40 Premier has average battery life and falls well short of the Camon 40 Pro, which has only 100mAh more in its tank. Worse, the older Camon 30 Premier beats its successor despite having a smaller battery. Tecno really didn’t get the best use of the new Si/C battery technology.

When it comes to charging, the 70W charger is a good match for the 5,100mAh battery. We suspect that most people will use the default Smart mode and that is fast enough – on the flip side, Hyper mode is only marginally faster and will likely be used rarely if you even remember to manually toggle it at all.

Honor has teased not one, but two upcoming smartwatches that are set to be unveiled soon. This happened during the launch of the MagicBook Pro 16 laptop in China earlier today.

The teaser image only shows us each device in part, as you can see. Undoubtedly, more teasers are set to follow in the near future, ahead of the full unveiling.

The watch on the left seems to have an octagonal case shape with a big crown on the top right side and a physical button on the bottom right. Its design is very reminiscent of that of the Watch 5 Ultra which Honor unveiled back in March, so two things could be happening here – either Honor is actually teasing the impending availability of the Watch 5 Ultra, or it’s used a similar design for another smartwatch.

The watch on the right of the teaser image has a more traditional circular case shape, but with a very interesting lug shape. We’ll let you know when we find out more about both of these watches.

Chinese smartphone makers have recently started caring a lot about the eye health of their customers, constantly resorting to third-party “low blue light” certifications as well as very high rates of PWM dimming. Google? Not so much. Not at all, really.

But that may all change later this year. According to a new report, the company is finally planning to do something about its low PWM dimming rate “later this year”, which obviously implies the Pixel 10 series will be the first in Google’s history to have high PWM dimming.

In case you’re unaware, most OLED screens reduce brightness not by actually reducing brightness, but by introducing flicker (“pulse width modulation” aka PWM). The lower the rate per second, the more susceptible some people are to headaches. So in this regard, higher is better and hopefully Google will introduce a much higher rate in order to appease people who are sensitive to PWM dimming.

Granted, this isn’t the biggest display upgrade ever, but it will be incredibly useful to those affected by the company’s previous devices, so it’s a step forward for the Pixel 10 series nevertheless.

Back in February, some code in the iOS 18.4 beta revealed that Apple was preparing to add Google’s Gemini to Apple Intelligence, following its initial partnership with OpenAI for ChatGPT.

And now Google CEO Sundar Pichai has said in court proceedings that he is hopeful that Gemini will be added as a built-in AI option in iOS this year. He added that he’s been in talks about the feature with Apple CEO Tim Cook throughout 2024. Pichai hopes that a deal on the matter between the two companies will be done by the middle of this year.

That is incidentally when Apple is expected to unveil iOS 19, during its annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), which usually takes place in June. So this entire timeline seems to imply that as of the iOS 19 betas, which should be released in June, Google’s Gemini could be a built-in AI option alongside ChatGPT.

Pichai made his remarks in court proceedings during the US Government’s ongoing antitrust trial against Google.

Yesterday the selfie camera of Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy S25 Edge got revealed to be using the S5K3LU sensor with 1/3.2″ type size. Today the same source is back with confirmations of the main camera as well as the ultrawide, and thus the phone’s full camera package has now been outed (since it doesn’t have a telephoto).

The main camera is unsurprisingly (since it was rumored a lot) the same 200 MP unit used on the Galaxy S25 Ultra, with a 1/1.3″ type sensor. The ultrawide is 12 MP and uses a 1/2.55″ type sensor, which means it will be identical to the ultrawide found in the Galaxy S25 and Galaxy S25+. So, unfortunately, the S25 Ultra’s 50 MP ultrawide will be exclusive to that model for the time being.

Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge rear cameras

The 200 MP main camera should provide very good 2x zoom shots, as evidenced in our review of the Galaxy S25 Ultra, which will slightly compensate for the lack of a proper telephoto. Then again, you’re probably buying the S25 Edge for how thin it is, and not necessarily for its camera prowess, right? And compared to the iPhone 17 Air, at least it has an ultrawide as well.

According to the most recent rumor on the matter, the Galaxy S25 Edge will be announced on May 13 and released on May 23 in Korea and China. Then, on May 30, it will also make its way to other markets including the US.
